From Indonesia, a U.S. document can usually be notarized in one of three ways: at a U.S. consular post such as the Embassy in Jakarta, before a notary in Indonesia with whatever extra certification the U.S. side requests, or by video with a commissioned U.S. notary through remote online notarization. The right choice depends on what the bank, attorney, title company or agency in the United States will accept, so ask them before you book anything.
This guide covers the U.S. side and the practical logistics. For anything involving Indonesian law or local formalities, speak with a professional in Indonesia.
Why U.S. paperwork lands in Jakarta, Surabaya or Bali
The requests that reach signers in Indonesia tend to fall into a few groups:
- Family and property. A family selling a house a parent bought in California, or a sibling in the United States handling a relative's estate and needing a signed consent.
- Former students and workers. People who studied or worked in the United States and left behind a bank account, a car title or a retirement account that now needs a signed form.
- Americans living in Indonesia. U.S. citizens based in Bali or Jakarta who must sign a deed, a power of attorney or a brokerage form back home.
- Business. An Indonesian founder or director signing a resolution or a certificate for a U.S. company or a U.S. partner.
Three questions to send the U.S. recipient first
- Do you accept a remote online notarization performed by a U.S. notary, or does it have to be a paper document with an ink signature?
- If you accept a notarization by a notary in Indonesia, what certification must accompany it?
- Where should the original go, and by what date?
Ask for the answer in writing. It protects you if a different employee picks up the file later. Also ask whether witnesses are required, because some U.S. documents need them in addition to the notary. The general guide on notarizing a U.S. document from abroad covers the same decision for any country.
Comparing the routes from Indonesia
A U.S. consular notarization
The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and the U.S. Consulate General in Surabaya offer notarial services by appointment for documents meant for use in the United States. Strict recipients, such as some courts and federal agencies, know this format well. The trade-off is travel: from Medan, Makassar or Bali, it can mean a flight and a night away from home. Bring your passport and the unsigned document, and ask in advance how witnesses are handled.
A notary in Indonesia
Signing before a local notary is convenient, and some U.S. recipients accept it when an additional certification is attached. Others refuse foreign notarizations outright. Get the recipient's instructions first, then ask a professional in Indonesia how any local certification is obtained.
Remote online notarization with a U.S. notary
You join a recorded video session from home or the office. The U.S. notary verifies your identity, watches you sign electronically and completes a U.S. notarization during the call. Many U.S. recipients accept this without anything more. TRSG's international signer service is built for signers abroad, once the recipient has confirmed it accepts an electronic notarization.
Single names, spellings and your passport
Many Indonesians use a single name, while U.S. forms almost always expect a first and a last name. This mismatch is one of the most common reasons a session gets postponed. Before you sign:
- Check exactly how your name appears in your passport, including how the surname field is filled.
- Compare it with the name typed on the U.S. document, letter by letter.
- If they differ, ask the recipient to correct the document or to tell you how they want it handled. Do not improvise a surname on the day.
A valid passport is usually the most practical ID for a U.S. remote session. The guide on identity verification for remote signers explains what the notary checks. The notary cannot explain or translate the document, so if the English legal wording is hard to follow, ask the sender to walk you through it before the appointment.
Planning around a twelve-hour gap
Jakarta is eleven or twelve hours ahead of the U.S. East Coast, depending on the season, and Bali and eastern Indonesia are further ahead still. In practice, an evening session in Indonesia falls in a New Jersey morning, while an early morning session in Jakarta falls on the previous evening in the United States. Write the appointment in both time zones, with the date, so nobody shows up a day early or late. Choose a quiet room with stable internet, and keep a phone with mobile data ready in case the connection drops.
When a paper original must travel
If the recipient needs paper, print the document exactly as received, sign through the accepted route, scan every page and ship it with a tracked international courier. Send the tracking number to the recipient the day you ship. When the paper is easier to prepare in the United States, the print, sign, scan and mail service handles printing and assembly, and international mailing covers tracked DHL Express or FedEx shipments to Indonesia and back.
How TR Signing Group handles it
TR Signing Group is a U.S. company based in Bayonne, New Jersey, and it handles anything from a single signature to a full international file. TRSG reviews the recipient's instructions with you and confirms the route before anything is signed. When remote online notarization is accepted, Tanim Raquib, a commissioned New Jersey notary public, holds the session at an hour that works in Indonesia through the international signer service. When paper is required, TRSG prepares it and ships it with tracking. Request a quote or book a free 15-minute call to talk through your case.

Questions we hear often
Can I use a U.S. online notary from Indonesia?
Often, yes, if the U.S. recipient accepts remote online notarization. Get their confirmation in writing before you book the session.
I only have one name. Can I still sign a U.S. document?
Yes, but the name on the document must match your passport. Ask the recipient how to fill the first and last name fields before the session, not during it.
Do I have to travel to Jakarta or Surabaya?
Only if the recipient requires a consular notarization. Other routes may be acceptable, so ask the recipient first.
What time will my session be?
Indonesia is many hours ahead of New Jersey, so sessions are usually set in your evening or early morning. TRSG confirms the time in both time zones.
Can TRSG tell me whether a notary in Indonesia is enough?
Only the U.S. recipient can answer that. TRSG helps you ask the right questions and handles the U.S. notarization and shipping once the route is clear.
