Notarizing U.S. documents from Colombia: how families and professionals in Bogota choose a route

In Bogota, Medellin or Cali with a U.S. power of attorney, affidavit or bank form to sign? Compare the U.S. Embassy, a Colombian notary and remote online notarization, and learn which questions to ask the U.S. recipient first.

From Colombia, a U.S. document can usually be notarized three ways: at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, before a Colombian notary with any further certification the recipient requires, or by video with a U.S. notary through remote online notarization. The U.S. recipient decides which one works, so their instructions come first.

A common case: a parent or sibling in Florida, New Jersey or New York needs something handled there, and the family member in Colombia must sign a power of attorney, an affidavit, a consent or a bank form. This guide covers the U.S. side and logistics; for Colombian legal questions, consult a local professional.

What is the document, and who asked for it?

This answer shapes everything else. Examples:

  • A power of attorney so a relative in the United States can sell a car, manage a bank account or deal with a landlord for you. The bank or attorney relying on it often has its own rules.
  • An affidavit or sworn statement requested by a U.S. attorney, for example in an estate or family matter.
  • A bank or brokerage form to close an account, change an address or release funds.
  • A consent or acknowledgment for property you co-own with family in the United States.

Ask the recipient in writing how they want it notarized. That one email saves more time than anything else here.

Is the U.S. Embassy in Bogota the right choice?

The U.S. Embassy in Bogota can provide notarial services for documents intended for use in the United States. Consular notarizations are widely recognized by U.S. banks, courts and attorneys, a safe choice when the recipient is strict or asks for it.

From Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla or a smaller town, Bogota means a trip and an appointment that fits your deadline. Bring the unsigned document and your passport, and ask in advance whether the embassy provides required witnesses or you must bring your own.

Can a Colombian notary sign off on a U.S. document?

A notaria in Colombia can authenticate your signature, but whether a U.S. recipient relies on that is a separate question. Some accept a foreign notarization with an additional certification; others take only a U.S. or consular notarization. Ask the recipient which certification it wants and a Colombian professional how to obtain it. Spanish wording may prompt a translation request.

This route suits a recipient who wants paper and accepts a foreign notary. The original must still be couriered to the United States.

How does remote online notarization work from Colombia?

A commissioned U.S. notary connects with you by video, confirms your identity, watches you sign electronically and completes the notarization in a recorded session. The result is a U.S. notarization, usually what a U.S. bank or attorney wants when the document stays in the United States.

A passport is the most reliable document for a U.S. remote session, so check that it is valid and readable before booking. The guide on identity verification for remote signers explains what the check involves. The international signer service is designed for signers in Colombia and elsewhere outside the United States, provided the recipient accepts an electronically notarized document.

What changes when a wet ink original is required?

Some recipients, such as certain county offices or banks, insist on paper with an ink signature. You then need a plan for the paper:

  1. Print the final version without altering margins or pages.
  2. Sign through whichever route the recipient accepted.
  3. Scan every page, including the notarial certificate, before shipping.
  4. Ship with tracking to the exact address given and share the tracking number.

If the paper is easier to handle in the United States, the print, sign, scan and mail service covers printing and shipping there, and international mailing handles documents that must travel to you in Colombia or a third country. The guide to printing, signing, notarizing and mailing from abroad has more detail.

Scheduling: the easiest time zone of any route

Colombia shares the East Coast clock for part of the year and is one hour behind the rest. A remote session fits your normal working day. Choose a quiet room, keep your passport and document within reach, and test your camera and connection first.

A few points that save time

  • Check your name. Colombian names usually include two family names. If the U.S. document shows only one, ask the recipient whether that is acceptable before signing.
  • Do not sign in advance. Sign in front of the notary, in person or on video.
  • Keep content questions separate. What a power of attorney should authorize or what an affidavit should say is for your U.S. attorney. The notary confirms who signed, not what the document means.

FAQ

Questions we hear often

Can someone in Colombia sign a U.S. power of attorney online?

Often, yes, if the bank, attorney or office relying on it accepts remote online notarization. Ask them first, since some require a paper original or a consular notarization.

Do I have to travel to Bogota to notarize a U.S. document?

Only if the recipient requires a consular notarization. Remote online notarization or a local route may be acceptable, so check their instructions first.

Which ID should I use for a remote session from Colombia?

A valid passport is usually the most practical choice. If you only have another document, ask before booking whether it can be used.

The U.S. document shows only one of my family names. What should I do?

Ask the recipient how to handle the difference before you sign. The notary identifies you from your ID as it reads.

Can TRSG tell me what my power of attorney should include?

No. That is a question for your U.S. attorney. TRSG handles the signing, notarization and logistics.
